Que Rico Food Truck

Written By Scott Joseph On December 5, 2011

Que_Rico_burgerI went out to the Pottery Festival at the Loch Haven Community Center Saturday. I picked up a lovely Elizabeth Maupin original (she told me to put it back down before I broke it). Afterwards I went across the street to where a few food trucks had gathered in a mini pod.

I was intrigued by the Swedish food truck, Swede Dish (I still think it should have one of those yellow caution signs in the window that reads “Smorg On Board). But I settled on the arepa burger at the Que Rico, a truck specializing in Colombian food. The arepa burger is a burger burger, that is to say that it is made with ground beef like most burgers we all know. But instead of a conventional bun, the patty is placed between two arepas (arepi?), the dense corn cakes that are a staple of Colombian cuisine.

I liked the arepas very much, and I think that’s a terrific creative twist for a food truck to offer. I also liked the little shoestring potatoes that topped the patty, along with melted cheese, lettuce and tomato. I just wish the patty itself had been more distinguished. It was merely OK. It could have been thicker and juicier for my taste. Now if you could take the burger from the Crooked Spoon food truck and slap that between a couple of tasty arepas, then we’re talking a legendary burger.

Because Que Rico is a food truck, it’s difficult to tell you where it can be found. Food truckers have a tendency to be peripatetic. To give you an example, Que Rico has a website, and it lists two addresses: 30 S. Orange Ave. and 100 W. Washington St. in downtown Orlando. It also has a phone number, which, when dialed, gets a recording that says the number is not in service. You may get better information from the Que Rico Facebook page.
