Pizza Ponte

Ponte sandwiches

It’s fun to have a place like Disney Springs to take visitors to, just to walk around and gawk.

There’s the majestic expansiveness of Morimoto Asia and Maria & Enzo’s, the jaw-dropping emersiveness of Planet Hollywood’s observatory-like projections, and the amusement of watching cars drive into the lagoon next to the Boathouse. The Edison has all sorts of distractions, Raglan Road is always a foot-stomping good time and Wine Bar George is great for a sip and a nosh.

And all are good places to dine, too.

But following a quiet cocktail in the underground lair of Enzo’s Hideaway (plus a nosh of some delicious Meatball Sliders), my visitors and I thought we’d just get a quick bite for dinner at Pizza Ponte just upstairs. I had never eaten at the little quick-serve next to the entrance to Maria & Enzo’s, and a slice of pizza sounded just right.

I was surprised to find that while one can indeed get a slice of pie — and delicious pie at that — one may also find some really good sandwiches.

Ponte mortadella

I didn’t know what the first sandwich I spotted behind the counter was, but I knew that I had to have it. It turned out to be Mortadella, and the focaccia the surrounded the multiple slices of the thin-sliced sausage was as buttery tasting and fresh as it could be. It also had Provolone, peppery arugula and tangy slices of hot pickles.

There were two types of pizza, thicker crusted Romanesque squares and Neapolitan (or New Yorker) thin crusted round pies.

The latter were massively huge, and even a single slice required two hands to handle. But the tomato sauce that was slathered on the soft crust was perfectly seasoned. I had grabbed some shakers with parmesan, oregano and peppers to supplement the mozzarella topping but I never used any, it was just right.

Ponte square

One of my guests had the square pizza, dotted with ham. I liked the chewiness of the crust.

Ponte muff

Another had the Muffaletta, although it was different from a conventional New Orleans-style muff. This one was on a crustier baguette-like Italian stirato and also had mortadella with fontina and a bit of arugula. Both sandwiches were heated along with the slices in the big oven behind the counter, which was a nice touch.

Pizza Ponte also serves beer and wine, though because of the takeout nature of the restaurant they’re served in plastic containers. But that just makes it better to walk away with. There are some inside tables and chairs and more outside on a patio overlooking the the Disney Springs walkway, ideal for people watching.

But we preferred to move on and check out more of the fun venues.

Pizza Ponte is at 1560 East Buena Vista Drive, Lake Buena Vista. It is open for lunch and dinner daily, including late night (until 1 a.m.) on weekends. The phone number is 407-560-9463.
