Mykonos

Mykonos exterior

I finally made it up to the new Mykonos. Well, it was new 10 months ago when it started serving its popular Greek food again. Technically, it’s not new at all.

I first reviewed Mykonos back in 2000 when it first opened in the Springs Plaza in Longwood. Then it was called Mayerion Mykonos and it instantly served some of the best Greek food in town. Granted, there were only a few Greek restaurants in town back then. I remember that I liked the food, and I especially liked the lima beans. I think I even published the recipe.

But in 2016, the restaurant’s landlord informed the owner, Tina Karoutsos, that the lease would not be renewed. A medical clinic next door was expanding and needed the space. Instead of trying to find an existing restaurant that she could take over, Karoutsos signed for a new spot in the same plaza, directly behind where the original restaurant stood.

But the storefront had never been a restaurant, so it had to be retrofitted with all the equipment that goes into a new professional kitchen. You think your kitchen remodel took a long time? Mykonos was closed for over 18 months.

The new place is a little spiffier, not as cluttered as the old place.

And the food is still good (worthy of a Foodster Award for Best Greek in 2018, which I presented to Karoutsos, above, on my recent visit).

Mykonos soup

My companion and I started with Avgolemeno, the Greek version of egg drop soup but with an added tang from lemon juice.

Mykonos octopus

We shared a platter of Octopus, Squid and Shrimp, all grilled and drizzled with melted butter. The octopus was as big as the arms of a two-year-old toddler but much more tender (from what I’ve been told). The meaty rings of squid had a good chew without being tough.

Mykonos combo

We also got the combination of Pastitsio, Moussaka, Gyros and Dolmades. Both the pastitsio and moussaka were good, the former made with large macaroni tubes. The moussaka had a perfect bechamel topping. Both were made with ground beef, instead of more traditional lamb, so the taste was a bit mild.

There was ground beef in the stuffed grape leaves, too, along with rice. It was all covered in a layer of egg and lemon sauce.

We would have liked the gyros meat with some pita but none was offered. It wasn’t until we were finished that we discovered we had to ask for the bread if we wanted some. We made do by dipping the meat in the thick and flavorful tzatziki sauce.

Service was cheerful if not completely aloof.

I’ll admit I was a bit surprised that Mykonos reopened. Relocating a restaurant can be daunting. I’m glad Karoutsos persevered.

Mykonos is at 145 Wekiva Springs Road, Longwood. It is open for lunch and dinner daily. The phone number is 407-788-9095.
