Sharon’s Homestyle Cookin’

Another in a series of looking back at Classic Orlando Restaurants.

We’ve been discussing some of the restaurants celebrating milestones this year. Beefy King at 50, for example, and several others including Christner’s Prime Steak & Lobsters and Pannullo’s Italian Restaurant at 25.

I was surprised to learn about another restaurant to reach the quarter-century mark: Sharon’s Homestyle Cookin’.

Although it’s been cooking, or cookin’, if you prefer, for that long, it has only been in its current location for about three years.

That location is in the shopping center north of Hoffner Avenue with Orange Avenue on one side and Hansel Avenue on the other. The “new” location is larger than the original, which was just up Orange Avenue. The woman at the cash register said the new space required the purchase of about five extra tables (you can tell them because the tops are a different shade). There’s more parking available, too, and it’s easier to get in and out — take Orange Avenue if you’re headed south and Hansel if you’re going back north toward downtown.

I stopped in for breakfast recently — came in on Orange, left on Hansel. The menu has all the basics you would expect from a decent greasy spoon diner, but it was a daily special listed on the blackboard and the back of the room that intrigued me.

Sharons bowl

It was a Breakfast Bowl with potatoes, sausage, sausage gravy and eggs all stacked together. It sounded wonderful, but it sounded better than it was executed. Which is not to say that the individual components weren’t good on their own. The potatoes were wonderfully crisped, the sausage well seasoned, so too the gravy, though it was difficult to extract some of it to enjoy with the delicious flaky biscuit I had on the side. And my eggs had their sunny sides perfectly up.

Sharons mug

Coffee is served in mugs resembling flower pots. I’m guessing the servers have a pat answer if anyone mentions the coffee tastes like mud. (Though it tasted just fine.)

Service was just as you’d expect from a homestyle restaurant. All in all a pleasant experience.

Congratulations to Sharon and her gang on the silver anniversary.

Sharon’s Homestyle Cookin’ is at 5667 S. Orange Ave., Orlando. It is open for breakfast and lunch daily and dinner Monday through Friday. There is no website. The phone number is 407-856-9565.
