R.W. Blue

R.W. Blue bills itself as an “American Grill & Bar.” In fact, I’m guessing by the color scheme of the logo that the R and W stand for Red and White. And you’ll find such flag-waving favorites as pot roast, Philly cheesesteak and something called the Southernmost that features Key West shrimp.

But you’ll also find such things as fish & chips, gyro and a sandwich called the French Onion. So, we are the world.

When I asked my server what the restaurant wants to be known for — it’s too new to be known for much yet — she said the wings and burgers were their signature items.

I was in a burger mood, so I went for the one named after the place, and also indicated as an “owner favorite.” The R.W. Blue Burger features a double patty with melted Swiss cheese and crumbles of blue. It also had sauteed mushrooms as well as the usual tomato, pickle sections and leafy romaine lettuce. (Onion was offered but declined.) It was all on a very nice brioche bun. The meat was cooked just a tad beyond medium rare, but it was sufficiently juicy and overall a pretty darned good burger (as it should be for $14, which by the way also included good and meaty fries).

I also tried the appetizer of roasted “bleu” cheese jalapenos, because everything about it screamed red, white and blue. The chilies were cut in half lengthwise and sprinkled with blue cheese and bacon crumbles. It had a very homey appearance, and while it wasn’t unpleasant, the flavors didn’t quite come together to create something cohesive.

If I’m not mistaken, R.W. Blue occupies the space vacated last year by Fresh on the Fly. The front part of the narrow restaurant has high-top banquettes and the back part has booths. There is an open kitchen where the cooks talk as though they can’t be heard by the guests seated nearby, which means anyone in the place. Or they talk as if they don’t care. You’re on stage guys, act like it.

My server was smiling and friendly, and when I left I was thanked for coming.

R.W. Blue is at 1210 S. International Parkway, Lake Mary. It is open for lunch and dinner daily. The phone number is 407-915-5691.
