Artisan’s Table, the downtown restaurant owned and head-cheffed by Scott Copeland, has a pleasant vibe on Sunday mornings. It’s a decidedly young crowd, and I got the distinct impression that some of them had not yet been home since the night before. At least not to their own homes.

My guest and I were shown to a dark table in the center of the dining room. When we asked if we could possibly have the empty table next to the window overlooking Pine Street, she told us that they were waiting for clean butcher paper (which is what covers the tablecloths here) and that that paper was too dirty. There was no offer to seat us at one of the other, less dimly lit tables, so we alighted.

Artisans salmon hash

From the list of brunch items I selected the salmon hash, which featured hunks of potatoes, bits of fish, red bell pepper and huskily chopped onions. There were lots of good flavors, which came out even more with a couple of grinds of salt, but I couldn’t help but think it could be vastly improved with the addition of a poached egg on top. Maybe something to consider?

Artisans egg strata

My companion had the egg and chorizo strata from the breakfast menu. I’m not sure how the chorizo managed to get better billing over the more prevalent black beans inside. Better agent, no doubt. The strata was served as two rectangles that looked sort of like blond brownies (with the black beans looking like chocolate chips). And they were unfortunately rather dry, which my friend told the server when she stopped back to check on us.

The correct response would have been to apologize and offer to have something else prepared. Instead, she suggested she could bring out some more of the creme fraiche topping, which she did. Now my guest had a dry strata beneath moist creme fraiche. The accompanying salad was fresh and the mixed greens were nicely dressed.

I also did better than my companion is the way of coffee. Mine was nice and hot; his was tepid at best.

Besides the jovial buzz of the room, Artisan’s Table has another thing to recommend at brunch: a 9 a.m. starting time instead of the more standard 11 o’clock. That way you can get in, have something to eat, and get home before the neighbors notice you’re wearing the same clothes from last night.
