I’m sitting at Omelet Bar, a new restaurant across from the main UCF campus that specializes in breakfast and lunch. Or as its tagline says, “Breakfast. Munch. Lunch.” Those of you who associate the urge to munch with late night will be disappointed to know that OB is open only until 2:30 p.m. every day, so you’ll have to satisfy the munchie urge elsewhere.
And it’s not like the name implies other than morning meals, but the menu does feature more than carefully coagulated eggs. Once the lunch hour rolls around there’s an array of burgers, sandwiches and wraps from which to choose. And the early closing hour also doesn’t mean you can’t have a drink — everything from mimosas to bloodies to whiskey sours are yours for the sipping. (College proximity drives demand.)
An early morning appointment brought me to the east side of town, so I decided to stop in for breakfast.
Ironically, there are only four predetermined omelet selections, though a “build your own” options multiplies the variations exponentially.
I went with the Rancher, which had pepperoni, crumbled sausage, ham, spinach, black beans and onions plus a small amount of cheddar cheese inside the three-egg omelet. I'm not sure why it was given the name Rancher, it's more like a meat-lovers pizza inside an omelet.
Certainly no complaints about a lack of fillings; this thing was bursting. Not the prettiest plating I’ve ever seen but a nice omelet.
The house potatoes that came with the omelet were a little over fried. If the too-dark brown color didn’t prove it, then the way some of them disintegrated into ash when forked did.
Breakfasters get a choice of bread to accompany. I chose an English muffin, which came dry. No butter was offered but there were assorted packets of jam on the table. And nice quality jams, too. Also, my server brought me ketchup in packages that allowed for either squeezing or dipping, proving the U.S. is still number one in the field of condiment-delivery innovation.
The young serving staff is eager and at times attentive. I was offered a refill on my coffee after just my first sip, but then I had to ask the hostess if she could find my server after my cup sat near empty and cool for too long. (The hostess cheerily said of course, then alerted my server rather than grabbing a pot herself, which would have been the more appropriate response.)
It’s a big space, bright and welcoming. Maybe too bright, depending on your night before.
Omelet Bar seems poised to take on the First Watches and Keke’s of the world (and says as much on its website). With a little more polish it could be a contender.
