Salsas Cocina Oviedo

Took a trip out to Oviedo one recent very rainy evening and took refuge in Salsas Cocina Mexicana & Cantina, a popular Eastside restaurant.

It’s a lively place with a colorful interior that features bright paintings and Mexican star light fixtures hanging over the tables and booths.

In the American tradition of Tex-Mex restaurants, a bowl of tortilla chips and dish of salsa was offered when my guest and I were seated. I sipped on the house margarita, which was flavorful with its Gran Gala, triple sec and orange juice but did not affect my ability to drive after.

I created my own combo platter of enchilada and chile relleno, each with its own sauce and served with modest rice and beans. Flavors were good but the chile was chewy.

My companion had the Arroz con Mariscos, the mariscos in this case being grilled shrimp and small nubbins of bay scallops. They were served over rice and lightly dressed with a thin cheese sauce. My guest had expected something cheesier from the menu description of it being “smothered in cheese sauce.” None of the ingredients were in danger.

Service was sporadic, perhaps because of the torrent of rain. I should mention that we sat on the patio, which has a very high cover that did not prevent rain dampening tables on the perimeter.

Everyone inside was dry and happy.

Salsas Cocina is at 45 W. Mitchell Hammock Road, Oviedo (map). It is open for lunch and dinner daily. The phone number is 321-765-4193.
