Sometimes you find little gems in the oddest of places. And you won’t find too many places for a small take-out eatery than this one. It’s Capsized Kitchen, a small seafood-centric restaurant, tucked in a corner of a Sunoco gas station.
Let’s pause here while everyone gets the gas and grease jokes out of the way. Ready?
But there it is, past the shelves of the convenience store part of the station, a corner of the small structure with a professional grade kitchen operated, apparently, by a staff of two. As far as I could figure out, one is the main cook and the other helps out and takes the orders. Sometimes helping out takes precedence over taking orders.
The menu is definitely directed at the seafood lover. Shrimp, crawfish, garlic crab clusters and fish fillets cover the two-page menu. Even the requisite mac and cheese entry has shrimp and scallops within.
I selected the Seafood Chowder, a blond roux rather than dark, and with a creamier texture. It had shrimp and crawfish tails, chunks of potatoes and crunchy corn kernels. At the bottom of the foam container I found some garlic-infused rice. The chowder itself had a light dusting of spicy notes to give it a bit of a Cajun kick.
I also had the Bayou Rice Bowl, which had more of the rice as a base, served in an aluminum plate, with sauteed peppers and onions, shredded lettuce, some bits of mango and a protein of choice. I selected the andouille sausage to offset all the seafood in the chowder.
Once I got all of the lettuce out of the way, I enjoyed the moist and flavorful rice and the spiciness of the sausage. Don’t tell anyone, but I liked it even more when I put some of the sausage in the chowder. Win!
This is primarily a take-out place, though there is a picnic-type table next to the kitchen if you want to dine in. Don’t expect much in the way of atmosphere, though. (I did mention the Sunoco part, right?)
The attitude here is friendly and familiar if casual and unhurried. If that doesn’t fit in with your mood of the day, you might want to try someplace else. Maybe a gas station down the road. Good luck with that.
