Uncommon Catering & Eatery

When Uncommon Catering, a culinary service that started in 2015 using the incubator kitchen at East End Market, decided earlier this year to relocate to a storefront on Curry Ford Road, it added the words & Eatery to its name. The idea of owners Tara Vernau and Travis Smith was to offer a small dine-in space as well as foods to go while continuing to operate a catering business out of their very own kitchen.

Just as that vision was coming into focus, in late February, 2020 happened.

Although it was uniquely qualified to pivot to a takeout and curbside model seamlessly – and did – it stepped back in late March and began offering popup curbside events.

It picked back up with regular takeout-only service in June, but then at the end of last month began opening a limited number of tables indoors.

Uncommon’s menu is an eclectic but small collection of salads, sandwiches, baos, empanadas and a single poke bowl.

Uncommon poke

That’s the tuna poke bowl, featuring cool chunks of ahi layered with seaweed, avocado, pineapple kimchi, green onions and a drizzle of sambal chili sauce. A lot of things in the bowl – it didn’t really need the wontons that accompanied – but they all played well together.

Uncommon bao

The baowie wowie bow buns featured three of the puffy holders stuffed with hunks of sesame-glazed pork belly, cucumbers, some more of that pineapple kimchi, jalapenos and a crumbling of peanuts. The buns had a fresh quality and the fillings were delicious.

Uncommon empanada

I also liked the order of beef empanadas. The turnovers had a crispy crust and were filled with picadillo spiced ground beef and served with a cool jalapeno and cilantro sour cream dipping sauce.

Ordering is available by phone and the pleasant young woman who took my call was accommodating of all my requests. My order was ready at the time promised and delivered curbside without hesitation.

I guess uncommon times call for Uncommon Catering.

Uncommon Catering & Eatery is at 2942 Curry Ford Road, Orlando (map). It is currently open only for lunch, until 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. The phone number is 407-985-1174.
