Takeout Review: American Social

Written By Scott Joseph On April 28, 2020

There were a couple of nice surprises with my takeout at American Social, the still-new sports bar and restaurant on Sand Lake Road.

The first surprise was a 20 percent discount for picking the order up at curbside and not having it delivered through a third party app service. As you may – and should – know, most of the gig delivery operations take 30 percent of the restaurant’s billing. So it’s nice that AmSo shares some of that savings with the customers.

The other surprise was a card that was taped to most of the takeout containers to say
thank you for supporting the restaurant during the American Social-distancing period. That was nice, but even nice was that on the opposite side of each card was a letter, an A, an M, an S or an O.

It’s part of a promotional game. Collect all four letters and you’ll get a $25 gift card. If you order from all four AmSo locations, you’ll receive a margarita kit (get busy on that to win it before Cinco de Mayo). And if you collect all five of the restaurant’s daily specials, you’ll get a $50 gift card. I love having an incentive to eat, besides good food.

And the goodest of the food that I ordered recently was the appetizer of Goat Cheese Croquettes, ethereal orbs of cheesy deliciousness, lightly fried and served with a sweetish guava dipping sauce.

My AmSo Burger was nicely done, cooked to the requested medium rare and served on a fresh brioche bun with a thick slice of tomato, leafy lettuce and raw onions. And lots of cheese, American, of course, melted on top. And the fries that accompanied were still crisp.

I also had an order of the Ropa Vieja Tacos, which were loaded with tender braised brisket, with corn, peppers and a spicy mayonnaise in soft flour tortillas. Just one taco was filling enough.

Tacos and Tequila is one of those five nightly specials, so get those and you’re on your way to that $50 gift card.

American Social is at 7335 W. Sand Lake Road, Orlando. It is open for curbside pickup and delivery daily. The phone number is 407-454-9992.
