Our friends at First Watch have a new seasonal menu and I stopped by the Mills Park location recently to give them a try.

Oh, before I go any further I wanted to let you know that First Watch will be taking over the former Cinco Tacos + Tequila building in Winter Park. And it will be one of the few First Watches to serve alcohol – not a full bar but with specialty cocktails for those in a brunching mood. Also good news: they’ll be removing the gaudy fake grass from the side of the building.

But back to Mills Park.

FWseasonal bowl

My favorite from the seasonal menu was the Baja Chicken Burrito Bowl, which features a base of farro, quinoa and brown rice, so it must be really healthful, right? It’s also got black beans and chunks of chicken, slices of avocado and kale slaw. There’s a sprinkling of cotija cheese, some fresh cilantro and a squirted squiggle of lime crema. Also a beautiful sunny side up egg (cage-free, no less). Loved all the various flavors and textures.

FWseasonal pancakes

Flapjack fans will want to check out the Vanilla Chai Latte Pancakes made with a multigrain batter and topped with sliced bananas and plump raspberries. Chai maple butter serves as the syrup, and the cakes have a good sprinkling of super-seed crunch. It’s how you make pancakes good for you.

FWseasonal beets

Want to go more healthful than that? Try the Brilliant Beet Toast. It’s a thick slice of whole grain bread toasted and topped with a hummus fashioned out of beets. Some avocado slices, cubed beets and some fresh arugula drizzled with lemon are stacked on top and it’s finished with crumbles of herbed goat cheese. Not enough? You also get two cage-free eggs on the side.

FWseasonal bacon

If all that’s sounding a little too health-foody to you you should know that you can still get the Million Dollar Bacon, so named because it’s so rich. It features hardwood smoked bacon baked with brown sugar and topped with maple syrup. (I think it should be called 1.5 Million Bacon due to inflation – mine.)

FWseasonal drink

I couldn’t bring myself to try the Kale Tonic drink that I was offered but I did have a few sips of the Blue Booster, which has white grape juice, blueberries, lemon and a basil garnish.

Everything tasted so good that I told my host more people should experience it, and she said, “Why don’t you give away a certificate for your readers to come in and try it? And while you’re at it, throw in a free First Watch cookbook.”

FWseasonal cookbookSo that’s what we’re going to do. This week’s drawing will be for a $20 gift card to any are First Watch plus a copy of the recently published cookbook, “Yeah, It’s Fresh: Some of Our Favorite Recipes for Breakfast, Brunch and Lunch,” ($23.95, Story Farm Inc.).

This drawing will work like all the others: If you’re already signed up to receive my weekly News from the Flog e-letter, you’re already signed up for this and all future drawings. If not, sign up up here. Winners are chosen at random and are notified by the email on record. Prizes not claimed will be put back on the block for another drawing.

There are several locations to choose from in Central Florida. Click here for the First Watch website. Or just hang on to your certificate and wait for the new one to open and use your gift card for a brunch drink.
