Happy Hour at American Social

I love the beginning of the year when people make resolutions to eat less and go on diets and even do a Dryuary, where they give up drinking for the month of January.

I don’t participate in such things, mind you, but I love that people do because it means less crowding at fun happy hours. And speaking of fun happy hours, American Social.

AmSo, or AmSosh, as I like to call it, is the South Florida sports bar and grill that moved into the Orlando market last year, taking over a former Bar Louie spot on Sand Lake Road and immediately improving the neighborhood.

American Social is big on its happy hour, which runs from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday with $4, $5 and $6 drink specials and and great deals on shareable plates of chef Freddy Figuera’s food.

One of the drinks I sampled when I stopped in not long ago was a unique concoction called the Peanut Butter Jelly Time (pictured at top). It’s made with Maker’s Mark and Screwball Peanut Butter Whiskey (who knew there was such a thing?) plus a bit of strawberry preserves. And it’s garnished with the cutest little peanut butter and jelly sandwich you’ve ever seen (it’s actually just a bit of a crouton, but it’s cute nonetheless).

I liked it but found the Smoked Old Fashion, with Basil Hayden’s whiskey more my style.

One of the better food deals is AmSo’s Cheeseburger, a six-ounce patty cooked to order and served with a couple of slices of American cheese (appropriate for the location) on a fresh brioche bun.

I also liked the Avocado Toast, which uses multigrain bread as the platform with corn, pickled peppers (a whole peck) and crumbles queso fresco on the smeared avocado.

And you can’t beat the East Coast Oysters on the half shell, cold and chewy.

The bar staff is young and personable, and the atmosphere is always vibrant, even during Dryuary. By the way, AmSo would be a great place to watch the upcoming games.

American Social is at 7335 W. Sand Lake Road, Orlando. It’s open for lunch and dinner daily; happy hour 4-7 p.m. Monday through Friday. The phone number is 407-454-9992.
