Black Rooster Taqueria Curry Ford West

Black Rooster Taqueria, the popular Mills 50 restaurant, opened its second location, in the Curry Ford West District, last November, and when I visited it in late December I found that it wasn’t quite up to the standards of the original. Opening in a pandemic, supply-chain issues, staffing problems – who knows? Whatever the issues were back then seem to have been overcome or corrected, and based on a recent revisit, the Curry Ford West Rooster is proving itself to be a fine addition to the area.

Staffing doesn’t seem to be a challenge here. There were plenty of people working busily but not so much that they couldn’t offer a friendly welcome. Ordering is done at the counter and customers, in lieu of a flashing coaster or standard-issue numbered table stand are given a unique bobble head character so someone can deliver the food, whether it’s at one of the wood-topped tables inside or the picnic tables in the dog-friendly outdoor seating area.

My companion and I started with the tamale, one of the items that stood out on my visit last year. It seems to have gotten even better, with a surprising amount of pork inside the steamed masa that had an almost pureed texture to it.

We sampled three tacos: Achiote Pork, Smoked Beef Brisket and Black Rooster Asada. Each was served on a thick-walled corn tortilla and dressed with various accouterments. The meats were juicy well seasoned. Among the three I preferred the asada most. Bits of bacon and roasted peppers helped.

We also tried a side order of beans but there wasn’t much special about them and they didn’t add much to the overall enjoyment.

The Curry Ford location is more spacious than Mills 50’s and features large garage style doors that can be opened to give an al fresco feel even indoors. It’s a very comfortable place.

Black Rooster Taqueria Curry Ford West is at 3097 Curry Ford Road, Orlando (map). It is open for lunch and dinner Tuesday through Sunday. The phone number is 407-286-0508.
