J. Alexander’s offers its $21 prime rib for $20 — plus two other courses; you do the math

Written By Scott Joseph On September 10, 2009

I wonder why prime rib is so hard to find in this town. And good prime rib even harder.j alexanders

When I reviewed J. Alexander’s, the Houston’s-like eatery that opened last year on Restaurant Row Orlando, I viewed the prime rib listing with skepticism. But of course I had to try it!

And I liked it. As I said at the time:

The prime rib was a pretty impressive slab for supposedly only 12 ounces. But more impressive than the portion was the tenderness — exactly the buttery texture you expect from good prime rib, which in this case was more likely USDA choice. The plate included a cup of jus for dipping — I preferred the creamy horseradish sauce that was served on the side — and a massive mountain of loosely mashed potatoes that were more like a pile of potato lumps. They were, however, quite tasty.

The prime rib was offered at $21. The prime rib is offered on J. Alexander’s Orlando Magical Dining Month menu. And it’s a $20, three-course menu, so I think this is going to be a good deal.  And before you start thinking that they’re saving money by giving MagDngMo diners a smaller cut, the promised portion is the same 12-ounces. Go for it.

Or you can have steak Maui, grilled salmon or filet mignon with bearnaise. For apps there are the restaurant’s signature colossus onion rings, big enough to frighten small children, huevos rolls, a sort of Mexican version of egg rolls (huevos, get it?), or a spinach cheese dip with tortilla chips.

Dessert? I’m thinking the carrot cake is a better option than the chocolate cake or creme brulee, but I could be wrong. I was wrong about the prime rib.

Check J. Alexander’s listing at the Orlando Magical Dining Month Web site. You can see all the other participating restaurant there, too.

J. Alexander’s is at 735 W. Sand Lake Road, Orlando, in the Rialto center. The phone number is 407-345-1039.
