Thankfully, the song from "Beauty and the Beast" for which the restaurant Be Our Guest is named doesn’t play over the sound system as often as I had feared. “Beauty and the Beast,” you may be aware, is set in France, so therefore the new restaurant has a French flavor, though it doesn’t adhere hard and fast to Francocentric fare. The menu, under the direction of chef Michael Deardorff, might be described more as French influenced. And the food I tasted was very good. My tablemates and I started with a charcuterie platter of cured meats, sausages, cheeses, pates and a surprise or two. What appeared to be ripe olives under the dark lighting turned out to be plump, sweet cherries (and delicious ones at that). We also tried the mussels Provencal, which featured delicious liquor of white wine, butter and garlic but unfortunately small and tough mussel meats. There was also a wonderful salad of fresh -- and locally sourced -- green beans and tomatoes. Three out of the five entrees that I sampled were winners. I loved the pan-seared salmon, a beautiful reddish pink in the center, with a tender-firm texture, served on a creamy leek fondue. Note that during lunch hours the rest... Read more

The newest full-service restaurant inside Magic Kingdom is themed on the Jungle River Cruise, which is known for its punacious river pilots. You can expect a lot of corn from the waiters here, too. Try the fish collar and shu mai.... Read more

Let's just ignore the irony of a place with Tavern in its name that does not serve alcohol (following the annoyingly out of date dictate of Walt Disney that the Magic Kingdom not serve even beer and wine). There are few choices inside the Magic Kingdom for full-service dining. This is one, but just like the others, the food is rather mundane and doesn't rise much above utilitarian. Here, the fare is served family-style on platters for you to dish out yourself.... Read more

I wonder how many people try to recreate the scene from Lady and the Tramp where the two dogs meat in the middle of a strand of spaghetti for a kiss. That scene from the classic animated Disney movie was the inspiration for this full-service restaurant. How much nicer it would be if the inspiration had been good food.... Read more

Scott's Review

The first full-serve to open at Disney in years, the Wave is an initial disappointment, not only in its food, which peters out on the plate, but in the decor, which peters out beyond the classy bar. There are two gimmicks here: a "green" menu (notice the "sustainable seafood of the day" selection), and a wine list comprised almost entirely of bottles with screwcap closures. Never fear, these are mainly premium wines gathered by master sommelier John Blazon.

The menu is surprisingly limited, and the food is even more surprisingly unexciting.

Appetizers were downright disappointing. The crab cakes had too much filler and a mealy texture. Lettuce wraps featured pebble-sized pieces of lamb along with bay scallops the size of an eraser on the end of a No. 2 pencil. They were sauteed in soy-rice wine vinegar and presented as a soggy mess that diners are supposed to scoop into lettuce leaves to eat. This one would have been a failure at half the price, which still would have been too much to charge.

The best among the entrees I sampled was the fish of the day, a halibut fillet. It was fresh-tasting and had a lovely crisped exterior and beautiful white flesh insi... Read more
