You’ll find traditional music, familiar ales and even genuine fittings from old bars in Ireland, but the food is an updated version of Irish classics, some a bit highfalutin.

For example, we started our dinner with a seared scallop on a mint and pea puree. Just saying the words mint and pea puree will get you thrown out of most pubs in Dublin. But it was tasty, as was the potato and asparagus soup, lighter and smoother than you'd expect.

The next course was shepherd's pie, but as I said before, things aren't done in a traditional way at Raglan Road, and this was certainly the oddest shepherd's pie I've seen. Here, the ground meat mixed with gravy was dolloped onto a large spoon with a little mashed potatoes piped on top. It was a little more than one should shove into one's mouth all at once, but there wasn't quite enough to reallly get a feel for the flavor.

Whatever you have for dinner be sure to have the bread pudding for dessert. And the house band, which performs nightly, will make you want to get up and dance without moving your arms.

Scott's Review

It's big, it's loud, it's splashy, and it's more than a little cheesy, but T-Rex can be a lot of fun, especially for kids old enough not to be frightened out of the bejeebers by life-sized animatronic prehistoric lizards. The food is basic, nothing fancy, nothing stellar. But all in all it does a better job than its sister restaurant Rainforest Cafe.

I sampled a soup and entree. The entrée had two items that are offered separately on the menu, barbecued ribs and rotisserie chicken. The soup was a tomato basil, listed on the menu as lava tomato basil. Turns out lava is fairly sweet; who knew?

The ribs, a generous half slab, were tender and the bones easily relinquished the meat, but there wasn’t a lot of distinctive flavoring. The same was true of the chicken, an even more generous half bird. It was nicely cooked and had juicy flesh. But there were no seasonings, no flavor. It’s a common problem with restaurants in tourist areas to dumb down the seasonings so as not to offend the common palate. Pity. The platter also included a healthy portion of waffle-cut fries. Maybe healthy isn’t the right word, but you know what I mean.

Teppan is short for teppanyaki, the Japanese steakhouse style meal where you sit around a large grill with a bunch of strangers while a cook makes a big show of chopping your vegetables and grilling them with a lot of banging and clattering. Fun. The food is good, but ultimately overpriced.

Todd English, of course, is the charismatic celebrity chef best known for his Olives restaurant. I’m not sure English even knows where this restaurant is -- his name is used in a licensing arrangement -- but the people using his name do their best to keep his reputation intact. Occasionally they succeed. Still, at these prices - $18-$52 – it should be wonderful every time.

English did name the restaurant, or at least his kids did. During a trip to an aquarium one of them commented that it looked like a large blue zoo. Putting the two words together and not capitalizing them was someone else's idea, I'm guessing. One of the restaurant's design elements, which were orchestrated by the estimable Jeffrey Beers, is a circular grill where whole fish are supposed to spin around. English told me he calls it the Dancing Fish. Never seemed to work quite as expected whenever I was there.

Renovated in 2008, the dining room of the Japan pavilion now offers a serene setting inside and a gorgeous view of the World Showcase outside. Sushi is a forte here, although there also are kitchen foods. Most of the sushi chefs at Tokyo dining are women, so while the restaurant attempts to give a taste of Japanese culinary traditions, it does so by breaking down gender barriers. Very nice.

Scott's Review

Quite simply one of the best restaurants in the Southeast, headed by talented chef Scott Hunnel, winner of the 2008 Sante magazine Culinary Professional of the Year award. This is haute cuisine, and dinner here is a delight. The menu changes frequently but is prix fixe with multiple choices. This may be the last restaurant in Florida to require gentlemen to wear jackets. (Also, children under 10 are not permitted in the dining room -- yes, this is a Disney restaurant.)

V&A recently received its 10th AAA five-diamond rating, that guidebook's highest honor. Only 52 of the 60,000 North American restaurants rated by AAA achieves five-diamond status. Only two other Florida restaurants - l'Escalier and the Restaurant at the Four Seasons, both in Palm Beach -- have the top honor.

For a truly special treat try to snag the chef's table. It's a mulitple course feast (I lost count at 15) that can easily last four and a half hours.

A new offering -- a third option -- is the Queen Victoria Room, features tableside service from a menu separate from the dining room but priced the same as the chef's table, $200 per person plus $95 for the optional wine pairings.  A b... Read more
