Written By Scott Joseph On October 6, 2009

roy yamaguchiRoy Yamaguchi, he of Roy’s Hawaiian Fusion Cuisine, will visit the Sand Lake Road restaurant that bears his name to host the “Aloha Kitchen Challenge,” a cooking event that will pair three local culinary students with chefs from some of the area’s top eateries. The competition and dinner, which will take place Monday, Oct. 19, from 5 to 9 p.m., are open to the public by reservation.

James Petrakis of the Ravenous Pig; Reimund Pitz of Le Coq au Vin; and Kevin Fonzo of K Restaurant Wine Bar will cook with students from the Orlando Culinary Academy and Valencia Community College. The students are Carla Novelli, Brandon Callanta and Kelly Womack. The chef-and-student teams will be challenged to create a dish “in the spirit of Roy’s signature Hawaiian Fusion Cuisine.” The winning student will be awarded an internship at a Roy’s restaurant of his or her choice.

A panel of local judges will rate each team’s creation on taste, presentation, and individuality. And guests dining in the restaurant that evening will also have the opportunity to vote for their favorite course dish. Reservations are required for the five-course dinner. The cost is $85 plus tax and gratuity.

For reservations, call the restaurant at 407-342-1323. Roy’s is at 7760 W. Sand Lake Road, Orlando.
