Newsy Nuggets: Locking block burgers; Kura sushi; Fazoli’s; Kaya event; and Bacán tequila dinner

Brick burger

Here’s something for anyone who’s ever thought, “Gee, I really like burgers but I sure wish they were shaped like a Lego block.”

It’s also for people who don’t mind buying a ticket for an event that doesn’t yet have a date.

Brick Burger, according to a press release, “brings together the beloved world of LEGO® and the mouth-watering flavours of gourmet burgers…” The release also says that Brick Burger is a new concept coming to Orlando in September. But a closer read makes it look like the whole thing is a popup event rather than a restaurant moving into the area.

And September is the closest the announcement comes to an exact date. The event’s website warns people that they’re buying a ticket to an event that does not yet have a specific day or days. And the cost of that ticket is $47, which gets you a burger and one drink (soft, beer or wine).

And the location? They’ll say only that it will be somewhere on Jeff Fuqua Boulevard, which you probably know is the address of Orlando International Airport.

Maybe the organizers are thinking about a quick getaway after ticket buyers realize they’ve paid forty-seven bucks for a Lego-shaped burger and a drink.

I reached out to Denmark-based Lego to see if the pop-up restaurant is officially approved and received this reply via message: “We can say that this hasn’t been approved by our corporation. Our team has been made aware of the articles going around and will take further action if necessary.”

This one just might be bricked before it even pops up.

Kura Sushi, a revolving sushi bar restaurant chain with an existing location at Vineland Pointe, is planning a second restaurant for Waterford Lakes Town Center. The conceit here is that diners sit next to a conveyor belt with sushi bites glide by. If they see something appealing, they grab it. Kura takes the concept to a new level, literally, by adding a second conveyor to, um, convey special orders to the ordering customers.

This comes after similar sushi bars in Japan had to curtail their conveyors because people were posting videos of themselves on social media taking items off the belt, licking them, then putting them back on to whirl their way to another diner.

I assume this problem has been dealt with.

Fazoli’s is returning to East Colonial Drive. No, I don’t know why. The pasta-centric restaurant had occupied a freestanding building at 3922 E. Colonial Drive that has also been home to many other concepts – anyone remember California Burrito Company? Casa Barcelona? The Chinese restaurant Peter’s Kitchen seems to have settled in there nicely.

So Fazoli’s will move in nearby, in a former Boston Market restaurant. While the Orlando Fazoli’s closed about 15 years ago, one has remained in Clermont.

Kaya, the new Filipino restaurant in Mills 50 District from chef Lordfer Lalicon, will host a night market on Wed., May 10, from 6 to 10 p.m., in recognition of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. It will be held outside the restaurant and there is no charge to attend.

The next day, Lalicon will find out Kaya’s designation in the 2023 Michelin Guide. We already know the restaurant will be included, but a ceremony in Miami on Thursday will announce which of the already-named restaurants will stay listed as “recommended” and which will ascend with a star. I’ll be reporting from the event at LoanDepot Park so watch for updates.

Bacán, the upscale casual (and 2022 Michelin Guide recommended) restaurant at Lake Nona Wave hotel, will offer a four-course dinner with tequila and mezcal pairings from Lobos 1707 on Friday, May 26, at 6 p.m. Tickets are $95 for the dinner or $150 with the pairings. Call the restaurant for reservations.
