This is probably more attention than Bud Light deserves.

But the Anheuser-Busch InBev brand has been at the center of a brewhaha that has prompted a boycott and a counter buycott. And locally, a restaurant and bar has decided to take a stand in a rather public and pinheaded way.

The restaurant, Grills Seafood, which has locations in Cape Canaveral, Melbourne and on North Orange Blossom Trail in Orlando, removed Bud Light from its list of beers and, according to an article in The Space Coast Rocket, destroyed what it had in stock with a manager allegedly telling staff, “We don’t serve faggot beer.”

To be clear, Bud Light does not have a sexual orientation. It’s a beer. The controversy, which is really just a tempest in a still pot, stems from a promotion and paid sponsorship deal by the Belgian-owned megabrewer that included sending an influencer named Dylan Mulvaney a can with her face on it. The can went just to her – you won’t find them on retail shelves anywhere.

But what set so many people off, including, one assumes, the management at Grills, is that Mulvaney is a trans woman. Right-leaning celebrities and conservative pundits exploded like a keg left in the hot sun. According to an article on Vox, right-wing commentator Ben Shapiro declared on his program, “Well, folks, our culture has now decided men are women and women are men and you must be forced to consume products that say so.” The article did not include any photos of video of Shapiro being held down and someone pouring beer down his throat. I’m still hoping those images come through.

The amusing thing is that Grills – and other businesses around the country that have also removed Bud Light from their package stores and bar lists – is still offering other Anheuser-Busch InBev brands. Indeed, it would be difficult for a bar to completely divest itself with the brewer – it has more than 100 brands. 

But here’s the thing: Grills Seafood has every right to take a stand and refuse to sell a particular beer because it does not mesh with its views, regardless of how bigoted. Now if the manager had been overheard saying, “We don’t serve faggots beer,” we might have to take issue with that. But they’re not likely to have that problem given the backlash their stance has caused on social media. Some posters are even going out and purchasing Bud Light just to make a point.

I have the same rights as Grills and my business can take a stand, too. Which is why I’ve removed it from my online restaurant listings.
