Newsy Nuggets: Burger edition

Written By Scott Joseph On March 24, 2023

Graffiti College Park

The College Park Graffiti Junktion will be scrubbed away Sunday. The burgerie, which opened in 2010, was the second location for the local mini chain. The first was in Thornton Park on East Washington Street. That one opened in 2008 in the space that is currently occupied by Cavo’s Kitchen and Bar. The Thornton Park GJ moved down the street to the corner of Summerlin Avenue in 2017, taking over the former Wildfire barbecue restaurant building.

At that time there were 10 Graffitis Junktion in operation. After Sunday there will be four remaining. The downtown Orlando store, on Church Street, closed in 2019 and is set to be home to a new taco concept.

Graffiti Junktion is known for its substantial burgers, loud music and louder decor.

Here’s a fun fact: before Graffiti Junktion, that College Park address was home to K Restaurant.

Perhaps hoping to fill the burger gap left by Graffiti Junktion leaving downtown, Papi Smash Burger has opened at 66 E. Pine St. in what had been a Jimmy Hulas. Papi is from chef Chris Hernandez who had operated a food truck prior.

If Papi’s burgers are anything close to what they look like on the restaurant’s Instagram page, they’re bound to be a big hit.

If fancy burgers aren’t your thing, perhaps you’ll be excited to know that San Diego based chain Jack in the Box plans to open locations in Florida, including Orlando. The chain, which started in 1951, left the Florida market 30 years ago.

It’s standard fare along the same lines as McDonald’s or Wendy’s but most of the locations are in the west. They were everywhere when I lived in Phoenix; I think I might have visited one’s drive-thru window once. I remember little about it.

No dates or locations have been announced yet.
