Newsy Nuggets: New Tabla and other stuff

Written By Scott Joseph On December 9, 2022

Our friends at Tabla celebrated the one year anniversary of their third location, in Lake Nona, by opening a fourth. The new Tabla is in Oviedo, at 945 City Plaza Way, in the space that previously was occupied by De La Vega, which closed in February, citing vagaries of the pandemic.

The Tabla collection now includes the original, near Universal Orlando (which was one of the first restaurants I reviewed for this website); the Park Avenue location, which opened in 2020; Lake Nona; and Oviedo.

The Current Seafood Counter, which operates out of Henry’s Depot in Sanford, will open a second location in College Park, taking over the space previously held by Jade

Sushi and New Asian.

In related news, Jade Sushi and New Asian has closed.

Jollibee, the popular Filipino chain, is apparently into chain yanking. It had previously announced it would open in late October, then by year’s end. Now it’s up in the air. No Chicken Joy for you.

Dr. Phillips Charities, which is developing the Packing District project, announced this week that a “juice stand” will be home to Foxtail Coffee Co., Kelly’s Homemade Ice Cream, and Ravenous Pig Brewing Co. The 1800-square-foot stand is meant to pay homage to one that was part of the Dr. Phillips citrus operations, some of which were on the parcel of land that will be the Packing District.

For those who don’t know, Phillip Phillips did not make his fortune as a medical doctor but rather as a citrus baron – at one point his operation grew one hundred million oranges a year. According to Joy Wallace Dickinson, who wrote many entertaining columns about local history for the Orlando Sentinel, Phillips’ doctoral title is something of an enigma. It may have been an honorary degree from the French government or he may have actually gone to medical school and practiced briefly in Tennessee. But, Dickinson wrote, he never practiced medicine in Florida.

But man did he make a lot of juice.
