Newsy Nuggets: Rum bars, cooking classes, chicken and rumors

Written By Scott Joseph On June 3, 2022

Rum Bar

The Caribe Royale resort has opened a rum bar. It’s called Rum Bar. Actually, the official name is apparently Rum Bar Featuring Bacardi Rum. It features Bacardi rum. It will also feature “Cuban-inspired bites,” which I hope means food.

Ah, yes, I see now in the press release: “In addition to cocktails, guests may also indulge in a selection of Cuban-inspired tapas, including beef empanadas paired with salsa pique and salsa criolla, ropa vieja flatbread made with slow simmered pulled flank steak, roasted peppers, tomatoes, onions, salsa criolla, sour cream and cilantro aioli, and Abuela Cruzitas flan served with seasonal berries and whipped cream.” I’m pretty sure that’s more than one tapa.

The Rum Bar (etc.) is part of a $127 million renovation at the resort (it wasn’t all spent on the bar). The resort is also relaunching the popular Venetian Chop House (nee Venetian Room). So it will be nice to see that very good restaurant back online.

I don’t know if the Venetian Chop House will get a mention in the upcoming Michelin Awards announcement but we’ll find out on June 9. The ceremony, at the Ritz-Carlton Grand Lake Orlando is not open to the public, but I’ll be there and I plan to do a live stream. Watch for details.

Terralina Crafted Italian restaurant at Disney Springs is hosting a series of cooking classes for kids over the summer. The classes, which are $30 per child and restricted to ages 5-12, will feature pizza on June 25 and Aug. 21 and ravioli on July 30. The classes will be conducted by executive chef Justin Plank, and, according to a press release, each participant will receive an apron, chef hat, sundae and a drink. It does not specify if its Bacardi or not. Details here.

California based Dave’s Hot Chicken has opened its first Orlando restaurant at 557 N. Alafaya Trail. Thank god! Finally a restaurant serving chicken sandwiches! According to the chain’s CEO, whose name is not Dave, “Dave’s Hot Chicken will blow your mind!” Did I mention it’s out of California?

Camille, the Vietnamese-inspired restaurant that has been operating out of the second floor space at East End Market called The Neighborhood, will move to a brick-and-mortar space later this year (not to disparage the bricks and mortar that make up East End Market).

And just because the name is similar, Camilo Velasco is said to have been promoted from his post at Disney’s Port Orleans to overseeing the Animal Kingdom. Waiting to confirm; Velasco was also rumored to be moving to Victoria & Albert’s at one point. Update: Velasco is now the chef de cuisine at Tiffins in the Animal Kingdom.

And speaking of Vickie and Al’s, it will be interesting to see if it makes the Michelin list, too, seeing as it has been closed since before the announcement that Michelin would be doing a Florida/Orlando guide,
