4Roots, the healthful community food initiative from the 4R Restaurant Group (4 Rivers) has been having some good financial news lately.

Earlier this month, PDQ, the fast fooder, presented 4 Rivers founder John Rivers with a check for $20,000, the proceeds from a collaborative sandwich promotion in June.

Now, Dr. Phillips Charities has announced an award of $5 million over the next three years to aid in the construction of the 4Roots Farm Campus in the new Packing District, west of College Park. The farm will include educational classrooms, a greenhouse and other farmy buildings plus a composting facility.

4Roots also announced that it will be bringing a farmers’ market to the Packing District beginning Oct. 2. Vendors scheduled to participate include Tomazin Farms, Frog Song Organics, Back Yard Farm Express, Do Good Farm, Brook Hollow Farm, Bekemeyer Family Farm, Urban Smart Farm, Ever Oak Farm, Sandhill Farms, Lake Meadow Naturals, Le Koope, Goats & Whatnot Farm, Black Bee Honey and Southern Honey Company.

The market will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the northwest corner of Orange Blossom Trail and Princeton Street. Once the 4Roots Farm Campus opens at 1599 N. John Young Parkway, the market will relocate there permanently.

According to a press release, all vendors are striving to manage waste, and O-Town Compost will be collecting food scraps to fill up that composting facility on the farm.
