Newsy Nuggets: New tenant for Palma Maria, Black Rooster reopens, date set for Space 220 and 4 Rivers flows to SoDo

The former Palma Maria restaurant space in Casselberry is getting a new tenant. NY Giant Pizza, which has a small shop on Colonial Drive near Semoran Boulevard, will move in as soon as permitting is approved, according to owner Domingo Montes. Montes, who grew up in New York, opened his pizza place in a former taco shop about six years ago and said that the Palma Maria location will double or triple the amount of space he has now. Interesting fact about Montes: he’s 100 percent blind.

Palma Maria was a longtime local Italian favorite that closed when its owner and operator Peter Rosinola Jr. died unexpectedly in early January. The closing was supposed to be temporary, but the family decided a few weeks later not to reopen.

Black Rooster reopened its Mills 50 taqueria Friday after closing for about five days because some staff members tested positive for Covid-19. A post on the popular restaurant’s Facebook page said that the staffers “haven’t been working since they tested positive and have been staying home until the produced negative tests…” The owners decided to close “out of an abundance of caution” to have the restaurant deep cleaned. A sign has gone up at Black Rooster’s second location in the West Curry Ford district but its opening is still a couple of months away, according to someone at the Mills 50 location.

Just an idea: What if we put the Covid vaccine inside tacos?

Space 220 Restaurant Interior

Space 220, the much-anticipated restaurant in Epcot’s Mission: Space attraction, will open in mid-September with upscale contemporary fare, under the direction of executive chef Marc Kusche, served from two-course (lunch) and three-course prix fixe menus. No info on what the prix will be fixed at. The restaurant will simulate dining on a space station (reached via space elevators) so you can assume the prix will be upper stratospheric. Or a mere pittance if you’re Jeff Bezos or Richard Branson.

The next 4 Rivers Smokehouse will be in the SoDo district in a former Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers at 3200 S. Orange Ave. The new barbecue joint will have an open-air pavilion that will offer the largest outdoor seating of any of the other 13 smokehouses. Another first for this location: a double drive through (you only need to use one of them). The SoDo location is expected to open early 2022.
