- Orlando is getting a new deli. Of some sort. It’s called Deli Desires and has been operating as takeout and delivery operation through its Instagram page. It is opening softly each weekend at its new storefront in Colonial Town at 715 N. Fern Creek Ave., north of Colonial Drive. It’s purported to be a Jewish style deli but the first item on a menu it has posted in its Instagram feed is bacon, so I have my doubts. Another graphic collage states it is non kosher. No schvitz.
DD’s logo features a wolf, which makes me wonder if it’s an homage to the late lamented Wolfie’s from Miami. Or maybe Wolf’s in New York. Also late, not as lamented. Some of you out there, those of you who are old enough to qualify for a Covid vaccine, might remember that the New York Wolf’s opened a location in downtown Orlando in 1990. It was in the office building at 255 S. Orange Ave. and it was less than the real deal. Didn’t last long. Hope Deli Desires does better. It will operate Friday through Sunday to begin, with a limited menu. And takeout only from onsite ordering.
- Ravenous Pig is hosting an outdoor Super Bowl viewing in its beer garden. Tables are available for prepurchase: $100 for up to four people all the way up to $150 for a table that will hold eight. Consider that a cover charge; the fee is not applied to any purchases. It was explained to me that for an event such as the Super Bowl, the tables don’t tend to turn, so the fee offsets the lost revenue. I can understand that. And a table at the Pig is considerably less than a suite at the stadium. That would run you about $150,000 to $750,000. That might include popcorn.
- Antonella’s, the pizzeria owned by the daughter and son-in-law of local LaCommare restaurateur family, will open a companion location to its Fairbanks Avenue restaurant. The new Antonella’s will be a neighbor of the original Viet-Nomz at 7591 University Boulevard, Winter Park. I’ll let you know when.
- Doshibox is a new Korean nonrestaurant. It’s a ghost kitchen outfit that only appears every Friday and Saturday, sort of like Brigadoon. It’s a pickup-only operation from a storefront at 4400 Curry Ford Road, Orlando, which I assume can be seen through a fog shroud.
- And Crave Hot Dogs and BBQ, a franchise out of East Setauket, New York, will open a location in SoDo in the Shoppes of South Orange at 1737 S. Orange Ave., according to Ryan Lunch at Orlando Business Journal. Late spring. It features a menu of … [checks notes]…hot dogs.
Oh, and barbecue.
