Newsy (and boozy) Nuggets

  • Chan’s, the Mills 50 Cantonese restaurant, has announced that it will close after nearly 24 years. The owners announced on the restaurant’s Facebook page that the property has been sold to a developer and that its last Crispy Fried Pork Intestines (the menu was pretty authentic) will be served at lunch on Friday, Nov. 20. Besides having good Chinese food, Chan’s was a reliable restaurant for Christmas Day dining for many locals, so it will be particularly missed this time of year.
  • It’s beginning to look a lot like a boozy Christmas, which is a lot like the boozy pre-holiday season but with tinsel. The Whiskey, the Restaurant Row pub and eatery, is hosting Maker’s Monday on Dec. 7 from 5 to 8 p.m. During that time you can purchase a bottle of The Whiskey’s Private Label Maker’s Mark, have it personalized in festive green etching, and get a glass hand-dipped in MM’s signature red wax. A shaker, too. All for $60. There will be drink specials, as well.

  • On Dec. 12, Ivanhoe Village will feature the 12 Wines of Christmas with wines from Tim’s Wine Market at venues scattered throughout the district. Tickets are $40 now and $50 beginning Nov. 21. Purchase them here.
  • The Dec 6 12 Beers of Christmas at Morimoto Asia is already sold out.
  • I’m waiting for someone to schedule the 12 Shots of Christmas where you down tequila every time someone sings “and a partridge in a pear tree.”
  • Virginia Drive Live is Nov. 28 from 5 to 9 p.m. A $5 wrist band (purchased at Ten 10 Brewing or Ivanhoe Park Brewing) will get you discounts at participating bars, businesses and restaurants along the Mills 50 district road.
  • The Mills 50 award-winning Black Rooster Taqueria will open a second location in the Curry Ford West district next year at the corner of Curry Ford and Crystal Lake Drive.
  • And Lime Fresh Mexican Grill has returned to the area with a new location in Lake Nona. The South Florida Tex-Mexery first opened in Orlando 10 years ago at the Whole Foods plaza on Sand Lake Road and then took the Johnny Rockets location in Winter Park Village. But those both closed. The new Lime is at 13052 Narcoossee Road, Orlando.
  • Speaking of limes, did someone just sing “and a partridge in a pear tree”?
