Newsy Nuggets: Food on TV, chicken-wing lasagna, and local food to the NBA

A couple of local restaurants are getting some national exposure. Last Friday, Git-N-Messy, a barbecue joint that operates out of a gas station, was on Live with Kelly and Ryan. Pitmaster/owner Chuck Cobb demonstrated his Southern poutine dish with pulled pork, coleslaw, cheese sauce and barbecue sauce on top of beer-battered fries.

Wed., July 29, Teak Neighborhood Grill will be on the Cooking Channel’s “Food Paradise.” The episode will focus on secret menus and Teak’s list of 37 burgers that can only be ordered if customers know a secret password. For me, the operative word there is pass. The episode will air at 9 p.m.

The 29th is also both National Lasagna Day and National Chicken Wing Day, and I’m begging chefs not to try to get fancy and combine the two into one dish.

Knife & Spoon, the much anticipated new restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton Grande Lakes, is now aiming for a Sept. 1 debut.

Word is that the NBA players sequestered in Walt Disney World Resort hotels aren’t happy with the food options available within their bubble. Orlando Sentinel’s Amy Drew Thompson and Iliana Limón Romero report that officials are trying to bring in food from up to 10 local, minority-owned restaurants. If they’re smart, they’ll put Nikki’s Place on speed dial.

Yelp, the crowd-sourced business review site, reports that nearly 16,000 restaurants nationwide have closed permanently since the pandemic began, more than any other retail business.

Florida bars and craft breweries are trying to keep off the permanent closure list even as they’ve been mandated to cease all on-premise consumption. Halsey Beshears, secretary of the Department of Business and Professional Regulation, which regulates bar licenses, plans to meet with bar and craft brewery owners throughout the state on Friday to discuss how they might be able to reopen.

Beshears announced the meetings in a tweet, because of course he did. He added, “We will come up with a Safe, Smart and Step-by-step plan based on input, science and relative facts on how to reopen as soon as possible.”

If only that tweet had been sent in April.
