Delaney’s Tavern Poised to Open in SoDo

Written By Scott Joseph On August 5, 2019

TAVERN DOORS 002

Hey, remember when Doc’s Streetside Grille closed? Well, do you even remember Doc’s?

If so, do you remember when plans were announced that the group of buildings where Doc’s was located would be rehabbed into a boutique hotel with a ground-floor restaurant called Delaney’s Tavern, all to open in 12 to 14 months?

You’re forgiven if you don’t recall any of that because I first told you about it at the beginning of 2016.

But my how time flies, and the hotel and restaurant are now poised to open, perhaps — just perhaps — around Labor Day. (Yes, this year.)

Anthony AlbinoSo imminent is the opening that the developer has announced the hiring of an executive chef, Anthony Albino, formerly the executive chef at Santiago’s Bodega. When the project was first announced all those years ago, the executive in charge said the restaurant would feature “everyone’s favorite dishes from around the globe.” But the new release says the menu will now be New American. Sorry if you wienerschnitzel fans got your hopes up for nothing.

Delaney’s Tavern will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, it being in a hotel and all. The bar will seat 25 people and the restaurant will have dining space for 175. There will also be a private banquet room that can seat 100 pharmaceutical representatives, for example.

The restaurant that used to occupy the space was originally called simply Doc’s — the name was a nod to its proximity to the hospital and also reflected the medical degree of its backer — and opened in 2005 with a kitchen helmed by Neil Connolly, former personal chef to the Kennedy family. The restaurant closed in 2008 when a culinary school took over the facility. The school essentially closed before it could open.

Then it became Legends Sports Bar & Grill. Briefly. Then it was rebranded as Doc’s Streetside Grille in 2013. Connolly died in May of that year.

Even back during the days of the original Doc’s there was talk of turning the upper floors of the medical office building it was located in into a hotel. I had my doubts the project would ever come to fruition.

And check out the sign on the tavern doors at the top — established in 2016? A tad cheeky.

But now it looks like it’s about to happen. Finally.

If it does, the address will be 1315 S. Orange Ave., Orlando.
