Bullet Point Buffet: Good news, bad news

Emilio and Gloria Estefan

  • From the good news/bad news files: Bongos, the Disney Springs restaurant owned by singer Gloria Estefan and her husband, Emilio, that serves what is arguably the worst Cuban food in Central Florida, is finally closing. That’s the good news. The bad news is that they’re opening another restaurant called Estefan Kitchen at Margaritaville Resort Orlando. The couple, above, made the announcement this week at the Kissimmee resort. Fall 2019.
  • The anticipated full service restaurant that will open adjacent to Epcot’s Mission: Space attraction will be operated by Patina Restaurant Group and executive chef Theo Schoenegger, who currently oversees Patina’s Maria & Enzo’s and Enzo’s Hideaway. Little details have been shared about the restaurant other than that it will have “internationally inspired cuisine.” I would have expected an intergalactically inspired menu. Maybe even chef piloted. Perhaps entrees will be served in little pouches. And if Disney hasn’t signed up Tang as a major sponsor, it’s losing its touch.

  • Orlando Meats has raised its hand to take over the food corner at downtown Orlando’s Orange County Brewers. Best of luck, guys.
  • The annual Dine for Paws, a fundraiser for Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando, an animal welfare agency, is Tuesday May 21. All you have to do is dine at a participating restaurant that day and it will donate 15 percent of its proceeds to the alliance. Participating restaurants include Urbain 40, Pig Floyd’s and Outpost Neighborhood Kitchen. Full list here.
  • Speaking of Outpost, Brendan O’Connor of Bungalower reports that the College Park restaurant will be reposting at the end of the year to Maitland City Centre. I always thought Maitland knew how to spell.
  • The 4R Foundation, the charitable arm of 4 Rivers Smokehouse, is hosting a Blueberry Gleaning Festival on Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Wild Goose Farms in Umatilla. Cost is $15 per one-gallon bucket and includes lunch from 4 Rivers and Wild Good Farms. Barbecue geese! Proceeds, matched by Wild Goose, will benefit Redlands Christian Migrant Association, FreeDOM Clinic, and The 4R Foundation's 4Roots Farm & Agriculture Center.
