An olio collection of bits and tids, or “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Bullets.”

  • Tapa Toro will host a chef’s table dinner of tomato-based dishes in celebration of La Tomatina, Spain’s annual tomato festival. It’s Aug. 29 at 6:30. Eight courses with wine pairings. Ticket information and menu here. By the way, unlike Spain’s festival, there will be no tomato fights allowed.
  • Tony Roma is holding its annual Rib Eating Competition in recognition of National Baby Back Ribs Day. It’s Saturday, Aug. 25 at the restaurant at 8560 International Drive. Rib chomping begins at 1:15 p.m. Don’t be late: the winner who eats the four pounds of ribs faster is expected to be announced at 1:30. Rib specials for those who wish to eat at a more leisurely pace. Should mention that there will be no rib fights allowed here either. I can’t believe I have to warn you.

  • Also this Saturday, the Ritz-Carlton is hosting an end of summer Pool Bash. If only Aug. 25 signaled the end of summer. Interactive food stations and live entertainment at the posh resort’s main pool. Tickets are $75 for adults and $35 for kids 12 and under. Reservations required; 407-393-4648. Interactive food station, by the way, means you can throw food only if the person at the station throws it first.
  • Because Aug. 25 is something of slow day, the Swine Family (those involved with Ravenous Pig and other porcinely restaurants) have invited Top Chef Kenny Gilbert for an End of Summer BBQ Roast (THERE ARE AT LEAST 4 MORE SUMMER MONTHS LEFT IN FLORIDA!) They’re calling it Pig VS Gator and you can get information and reserve a table at 407-628-2333. I’m thinking for this one you can throw whatever you want.
  • Nobody expects the wine inquisitor! Thursday, Aug. 23 — what? was there a conflict with Saturday? — Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World Resort will resort to hosting The Inquisitor Wine Dinner. It’s at 6:30 p.m. in Ravello’s demonstration kitchen (please, no protest signs; it’s that that kind of demonstration kitchen). Three courses for either $75 or $95 depending how much wine you want in your glass. The Inquisitor Wine Company is an Orlando company that apparently brings in wines from South Africa. Not really sure — there’s very little information on the company’s website. I’ll try to find out more. You know, in case you’re curious. 407-313-6161.
  • You can now pre-order your copy of “Waste Not: How To Get The Most From Your Food,” a publication of the James Beard Foundation. The book features a compilation of recipes and instructions for “full-use” cooking so that nothing is wasted or discarded. Hari Pulapaka of Cress in DeLand contributed a recipe.
  • And also available is “Red Lobster…The Beginning,” by Charley Woodsby and Dan Drayer. Woodsby is listed on the cover as Red Lobster’s co-founder, though most locals know him these days for his Talk of the Town Restaurant Group, including Charley’s Steakhouse. Drayer was TotT’s corporate chef until he moved a few years ago to the Dallas area.
