Bullet Point Buffet: Dark Dining, Cheesy Tea and Opening Announcements

Dining in the Dark

A smorgasbord of bits and tids from the restaurant world.

  • If you missed last week’s Dining in the Dark you have another opportunity in September. The dinner series, sponsored by Lighthouse Central Florida, features a meal served in total darkness — by members of the Orlando Police Department’s SWAT squad wearing night vision goggles — to highlight the obstacles faced by people with vision impairment. The next one will be held at the Mezz in Thornton Park, and many of the featured chefs, inlcuding Muddy Waters’ Bernard Carmouche and Greg Richie of Soco, only have to walk a block or two to get there. Tickets for the dinner on Sept. 13 are $200 and can be purchased by contacting [email protected]. Don’t wait; these dinners sell out quickly. I hope to attend, and I’m telling you right now I will have no negative comments about the serving staff.
  • The seventh annual Winter Park Wine and Dine is Wednesday, Oct. 10, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Winter Park Farmers Market. General admission tickets are $39; VIP tix are $69. Those prices go up to $60 and $100 respectively on the day of the event. Info here.

  • The Habit Burger Grill is featuring Giving Tuesdays through August. Each week, 20 percent of sales will go to a local nonprofit charity. Burger buyers must access a flyer at the Habit Burger’s website and show it — digitally or printed out old-school style — to the cashier. Upcoming beneficiaries include: July 31, South Orlando YMCA, Millenia and SoDo locations only; August 7, Shepherd’s Hope, all three Central Florida locations; August 14, Orlando Community and Youth Trust, SoDo location only; August 21, American Cancer Society, all three Central Florida locations; August 28, Kids Beating Cancer, all three Central Florida locations.
  • Royal Tea has opened in Mills 50 district. Despite the name, RT isn’t a place for high tea with crumpets. It specializes in bubble tea and is bringing the mystifying new trend of cheese tea to the area. Yes, cheese tea. (It’s a moussey topping rather than chunks of cheddar in your beverage.) It’s at 714 N. Mills Ave., Orlando, if you want to try it for yourself.
  • As reported earlier, Mykonos has reopened in the Springs Plaza in Longwood but not in its original location. Look for it on the side opposite U.S. Highway 434.
  • Stasio’s Italian Deli and Market has opened in the Mild District at the corner of Bumby Avenue and Robinson Street.
  • DaJen Eats, a “vegan cafe with a Jamaican flair,” is opening in its new spot in Eatonville on Wednesday. Find them at 323 E. Kennedy Blvd.
  • The H you say…The H Cuisine, a Mediterranean steakhouse drifting more to the Turkish shores, has opened in Marketplace at Dr. Phillips in the space that was previously Stefano’s Grill. You can’t miss it — look for the big H on the front of the building. Missing from any of the new restaurant’s online information: What the hell the H stands for.
  • Got a flyer in the mail recently touting Bonefish Grill’s “neighborhood catch.” I don’t know how you feel about it, but I’m not eating anything that comes out of Lake Lancaster. By the way, Clifford Pleau, who was the opening chef at California Grill and Seasons 52 and left Darden four years ago to head Bonefish Grill, is no longer overseeing the seafooder but still with parent Bloomin’ Brands Inc. He’s still vice president of research and development but is focusing on Outback Steakhouse and Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse.
