El Meson, the Puerto Rico based sandwich company that opened its first mainland restaurants in Central Florida last year, is sending help from the Orlando area to the Americans still being affected by Hurricane Maria.

On Wednesday, staff from the local sandwich shops in conjunction with iHeart Radio’s Activados por Puerto Rico and CASA of Central Florida sent off two shipping containers full of food and supplies. They will be sent to El Meson locations on the island for distribution to the residents, many of whom are still without power, drinking water, access to money and food.

“The people suffering Maria’s devastation are our employees, our customers and our family,” said Felipe Hamilcar Perez in a statement. Perez leads the Florida operations for the restaurant chain. “It doesn’t get any more personal than that. It is our responsibility to be an active part of the efforts to bring hope to them and to participate in any way we can in the rebuilding of the island.”

The food and supplies were collected at Meson’s Florida Mall location. They are expected to reach Puerto Rico by the end of the month.

El Meson is the largest sandwich chain in Puerto Rico, with 37 locations. There are three locations in Central Florida, at the Florida Mall dining pavilion in Orlando, Osceola Parkway in Kissimmee, and the Premium Outlets at Vineland also in Orlando. Two standalone stores are scheduled to open early next year in Lee Vista Promenade, near the Orlando International Airport, and in the Gardens of Millennia, near The Mall at Millennia.
