First Look: Reyes Mezcaleria

Written By Scott Joseph On April 13, 2017

The former Citrus Restaurant space in the North Quarter is undergoing a big renovation to become Reyes Mezcaleria, a new restaurant from Sue and Jason Chin, above, who also own Seito Sushi and Osprey Tavern in Baldwin Park.

I got a peek inside and a quick tour of how things are being moved and changed. Here are some photos. When I asked Jason Chin when he hoped to open, he said the 25th. Of May? I asked. No, he said. This month.

We’ll see.

Reyes Construction front door

This was the front door for Citrus. When Reyes opens, the front door will be farther to the right, in the small space that used to have a few dining tables but was away from the main dining room. A small private dining space on that end of the space will be made into a living-roomlike lounge. The concrete tiles stacked in the photo will be used to construct decorative dividers.

Reyes Construction Bar

The bar is still in the same space but is getting a new finish and wood top. It’s more open and central to the main dining room.

Reyes Construction private dining

The old private dining space has been opened a bit and a nonworking fireplace has been added.

Reyes Construction stencil

The original terrazzo floors have been uncovered and palm frond stencil has been applied.

Reyes Construction Austin

Everyone is chipping is. Or sanding in, as the case may be. By the way, that guy smoothing out the tabletops is Austin Boyd, the executive chef for Seito and Osprey. He’ll oversee the culinary program at Reyes when it opens, too. The menu will feature Mexican cuisine.
