Ocean Sun Now Brewing

Ocean Sun Brewing, Central Florida’s newest microbrew, officially opened to the public Monday. It occupies part of the space that had been home to Southern Moon Smokehouse, the barbecue restaurant whose initial intent was to have also been a brewery, though that never came to fruition, unless you count root beer. No one counts root beer.

Actually, Ocean Sun uses a space that was next to the restaurant that never had been fully developed. The former Southern Moon restaurant space will be a restaurant once again when La Fiesta, the Mexican restaurant currently slinging refried beans in a smaller space across the street, moves in. Although Ocean Sun does not have its own kitchen, it will offer items from La Fiesta’s menu to its beer-drinking patrons.

Ocean Sun Brewing will not win any prizes for its decor. The space, which was once an Eckerd’s drug store, is vast, open and rather drab. It gets its main design element from the gleaming steel brewing tanks at the back of the dining, uh, I mean drinking room. The array of tanks and tubes and gauges should make it clear that Ocean Sun’s owners are serious about their beers.

I stopped by a preview gathering on Friday and sampled one of the current brews. After noting that I’m partial to pilsners, the bartender set me up with Ocean Sun’s kolsch, which had a lovely deep yellow hue and a smooth but hoppy taste. I enjoyed it. Head brewer is Noah Cowles. For now, only Ocean Sun beers are offered, though the plan is to have guest brews when more taps are installed.

You can check out all of the current beer and ale offerings at Ocean Sun Brewing’s website. No word yet on when La Fiesta will make the move; I’ll let you know when I do.

Ocean Sun Brewing is in the Winn-Dixie Plaza at 3030 Curry Ford Road, Orlando. It is open daily at noon, except for Monday and Tuesday when it opens at 3 p.m. (Apparently once Wednesday comes around people start drinking earlier in the day.) The phone number is 407-745-5551.
