Get Ready for a Full Weekend of Food and Fun

Written By Scott Joseph On October 23, 2015

Jack in the Park

What a weekend! So much going on. Not the least of which, in my opinion, is the Jack in the Park event Saturday at the Rachel D. Murrah Civic Center, 1050 W. Morse Blvd., Winter Park. I’m delighted to serve as the honorary chair and emcee for the evening. It’s a night of pure fun, all designed to benefit Special Olympics Florida.

A card tournament of 21, or blackjack, is a big focus of the festivities. But there will be so much more, including a silent auction, raffles, entertainment, and, best of all, food from some really terrific restaurants.

Some of the restaurants that are scheduled to be serving include Flog favorite Tap Room at Dubsdread, Carmel Kitchen Wine Bar, Portobello, the Osprey Tavern, blu on the avenue, White Wolf Cafe, Scratch, BB King’s Blues Club, newcomers Lafayette’s and Itta Bena, and a bunch more.

There will also be a silent auction and an open bar. Tickets are $125 per person and can be purchased at the official Jack in the Park website. The event runs from 7 to 11 p.m.

You can combine your Jack in the Park experience with Cows ’n Cabs, which will be in full swing just a few block away at Winter Park’s Central Park West Meadow. The hootenanny, which was started a few years ago by John Rivers of 4 Rivers Smokehouse, is always a lively mix of music and good food. General admission tickets are $110 and can be purchased here.

The event is from 7 to 10 pm.

If you eschew cow and other forms of animal flesh, the Central Florida Veg Fest may be more to your liking. Now in its 10th year, the event serves to educate people about a plant-based lifestyle.

According to the press release: “Veg Fest will feature healthy living and eco-friendly exhibitors; speakers; local non- profit organizations; fun and games for kids; humane education; dog and cat adoptions; restaurant booths; food preparation demonstrations; community garden tours; and live entertainment. This year will also feature activities and performances by Ibex Puppetry. Visitors are encouraged to bring their children, dogs, and an appetite for the many delicious food vendors at this smoke-free event.” So the type of plants one smokes will not be part of the festivities, just so you know.

Attendance to Veg Fest is free and runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It will be at Orlando Festival Park, 2911 E. Robinson St. (parking is available for $5, or you can use the free bike valet). For more info, visit the CF Veg Fest website.

And to get things started, K restaurant of College Park is initiating its Friday Night Wine Flights in the the restaurant’s garden. Wine, of course, but also music and some tidbits tossed out the kitchen’s back door. Limited space, so call 407-872-2332 if you’d like to join in.
