Books, Cooks and Super Spies Part of Local Libraries’ Events

Written By Scott Joseph On September 14, 2011

bashI have a couple of library events coming up that I want to tell you about. What’s that? You think it’s odd for a food-oriented website to tout a library? What, you’ve never heard the term egghead?

And besides, these events have quite a bit to do with food.

The first event is one I’ve told you about before, and is one of my favorites. The Bash for Books is Winter Park Public Library’s annual fundraiser with food, wine, auctions and raffles. It’s always been very well attended. In fact, it’s such a popular and fun event that it has outgrown the library. So instead of setting up among the stacks, the BforB will be held at the Winter Park Civic Center, Saturday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m.

The new venue will give them room to spread out for this year’s theme, Bond…James Bond, a celebration of the literary works of Ian Fleming. The venue will be decked out as the lobby of the Casino Royale hotel, complete with  Aston Martins. I smell a chase scene!

Food at the event will feature tapas-size portions of dishes from Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Mitchell’s Fish Market, Tibby’s New Orleans Kitchen and Chez Vincent. Desserts will include cupcakes from the Sweet by Holly, pastries from Panera and ice cream flash frozen before guests’ eyes by Pure Magic Ice Cream. I’m told there will also be some of Jimmy Bond’s favorite cocktail available.

Tickets are $100 per person and include food and two beverage tickets. They can be purchased at the Winter Park Public Library, 460 E. New England Ave., Winter Park, or online at this link to the Bash for Books website. You may also call 407-623-3486 if you have one of those shoe phones. (Wait, I think I’m confusing my spies.)

The other library event comes from my friend Heather McPherson, who serves on the board of the Mount Dora Library. They will be celebrating their annual Books & Cooks — A Celebration of Florida Farmers and Local Food Artisans on Oct. 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the library, 1995 N. Donnelly St., Mount Dora.

Some of the things you can expect that day include:

·        New and used cookbooks for sale — all priced from $1-$3.
·        Cooking demonstrations with Slow Food’s Dawn Viola, local food columnist and cookbook author Valerie Hart, Stephanie Clunn of Living Towers Farm and Orlando Sentinel Food Editor Heather McPherson
·       A trade display area where participants can learn about EdibleOrlando magazine, Slow Food Orlando, Long & Scott Farms, Monterey Mushrooms, Lake Meadows Naturals, Deep Creek Ranch, Latitude Foods, Umatilla honey purveyors, Tropical Blossom Honey, Uncle Matt’s Organic, the Lake County Extension office home and agricultural and more.
·        Basket raffle
·        Pie baking contest (bring your best homemade pie). Winner will receive a gourmet gift basket

Heather is putting together a Facebook page for the event that should be up and running by Oct. 1. I’m sure she’ll give you a heads up on her Facebook wall. You do follow Heather on Facebook, don’t you?

These are both good events, and I encourage you to attend and support them.
