Papa John’s founder: Don’t eat too much pizza

Written By Administrator On February 5, 2009

John Schnatter is going to have a lot of explaining to do at the next meeting of Papa John’s shareholders.

Schnatter is the John of the Papa John’s pizza chain, the third largest in the United States. Schnatter was being interviewed Thursday on BBC Radio during a visit to London to promote Papa John’s franchises in Great Britain. Asked how pizza fits in to the British government’s anti-obesity drive, Schnatter said he wasn’t concerned.

“Pizza’s actually healthy for you if you don’t eat too much of it,” he said. “You can’t eat five or six slices, but if you eat one of two slices it’s very nutritious.”

“I’m not sure your investors would want to hear you tell people don’t eat too much of our pizzas,” host Adam Shaw replied.

Schnatter will probably take some heat for his comment. But of course he’s right. Pizza, like just about everything else we eat, should be enjoyed in moderation.

So listen to your Papa — just one or two slices. And no fair asking the pizzamaker to just cut the pie in half.
