More Disney chef notes

Written By Administrator On January 20, 2009

The game of Musical Chefs continues at Disney with the announcement that Robert Getchell has been named chef of Sanaa. Don’t know about Sanaa? It’s the upcoming Indian restaurant that will open at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, probably in late April or early May. Getchell had previously been a cook at Flying Fish Cafe and, before that, Boma — Flavors of Africa at the Lodge.

As reported previously, John Clark is taking the place of Brian Piasecki at Jiko — The Cooking Place at the Lodge and also overseeing Boma and The Mara.Piasecki was recently named executive chef of California Grill.

Robert Getchell is a graduate of Johnson and Wales University. He has been with Walt Disney World Resort for eight years. Besides Flying Fish and Boma, he has also cooked at Narsoossee’s, Spoodles, 50’s Prime Time Cafe and Kona Cafe.

Sanaa will be the first Indian restaurant at Disney. Early word is that the food will be traditional Indian — although the dishes might have different names to avoid preconceived notions people might have about the cuisine. Remaining to be seen: if Getchell pulls any punches with the traditional spicing. Given that his bio says his favorite spice is black pepper, we’ll keep a good thought.
