Se7en Bites Wins Gold Foodster Award for Best Breakfast

Written By Scott Joseph On July 25, 2017

Se7ev award

Boy, did I choose the right time to visit Se7en Bites, the “Sweet & Savory Bake Shop” on Primrose Drive in Orlando’s Milk District.

Not that there’s a bad time to visit. There’s always something good being baked or assembled by pastry chef and owner Trina Gregory-Propst and her team.

But I chose Sunday morning brunch time to stop by and present Gregory-Propst with her Foodster Award plaque. Se7en Bites was voted the Gold Award for Best Breakfast in the first annual program that recognizes excellence in the area’s independent restaurants.

And even better than choosing Sunday brunch, I happened to be there shortly after 10:30 a.m. That’s the approximate time that Cinnamon Bun Sunday occurs. Gregory-Propst explained that each Sunday she bakes some cinnamon buns — different recipes, but clearly cinnamon buns — and she makes only two sets of two dozen. When they’re gone, they’re gone.

And I got one!

Should have grabbed two. Dozen.

Seven roll

As anyone who knows me can tell you, I’m not really a sweets guy. Sweet guy, yes, but not sweets. I can appreciate a good dessert, but I’m able to taste and move on.

But every now and then I can go gaga for goo. This cinnamon roll, which Gregory-Propst said was her grandmother’s recipe, was soft and sweet and had just the right amount of sugary notes without the risk of anaphylactic shock setting in.

Se7en pudding

My companion and I went a more savory route with our brunch selections. I chose the Savory Ham Bread Pudding, a perfectly custardized pudding with bits of ham, asparagus, mushrooms and peppers plus a bit of cheese, topped with a peppercorn infused hollandaise.

Se7en biscuit

My friend went for the 3 Little Pigs, which had a fluffy buttermilk biscuit topped with a baked egg with ham and applewood smoked bacon and some cheddar chive grits. The third little pig? Obviously somewhere in the thyme-tinged sausage gravy that blew the whole thing away.

Seven Exterior

I hadn’t visited Se7en Bites since it moved up the street from its first location (which is currently the home of Bad As’s Sandwich). Gregory-Propst took over the building that at one time had been a Sonny’s barbecue restaurant. It still has a bit of a rustic mien, and serving the food on metal trays and plates adds to it.

7B operates as a fast casual operation: Order your food at the counter, take your assigned number to any open seats at the mostly communal tables, and someone will bring your food when it’s ready. If my experience is typical, that person will be smiling, polite and eager to offer any other service.

I agree with your choice of Se7en Bites as one of the Best Breakfasts in Central Florida, and I’m pleased to present Gregory-Propst with the Foodster Award to make it official.

Se7en Bites is at 617 N. Primrose Drive, Orlando. It is open for breakfast and lunch Tuesday through Sunday. The phone number is 407-203-0727.
