Cows ‘n Cabs Set for Saturday

One of the funnest events of the fall season is this Saturday, Nov. 11. It’s the seventh annual Cows ‘n Cabs, and I can’t wait.

C ‘n C is spearheaded by 4 Rivers Smokehouse founder John Rivers. Smart man that he is, Rivers noticed that every year the city of Winter Park puts up an elaborate pavilion-sized tent in Central Park’s West Meadow. The tent is used first for Fashion Week and then for the holiday ice rink. But in between, it just sat there, empty.

So Rivers said, Let’s throw a shindig. I’m paraphrasing because I’m not sure he uses words like shindig, but I can tell you, the man knows how to throw a party.

He gets together a bunch of other chefs and restaurateurs and pulls in some people who pour wine, beer and cocktaily things. They get a band to play some music, and everybody just wanders around eating, drinking and having a good time.

And for a good cause, too. The proceeds of ticket sales will benefit After-School All-Stars and Elevate Orlando, two local charities that work with underserved youths.

Tickets are $110 per person or $140 for VIP access, which also gets you in an hour early. Otherwise, the event is from 7 to 10 p.m. Whichever ticket level, it’s open only to adults 21 and over, so you don’t have to dodge SUV-sized baby carriages like at the Winter Park Art Festival.

This year, David Larue of ABC Fine Wine & Spirits is listed as co-host with Rivers, which should help with the beverages that make this an adult-only event. By the way, despite the name, there’s a lot more to eat than beef and a lot more to drink than cabernet sauvignon. In fact, for the past several years, Rivers and his crew have featured a full roast pig at their booth. It’s always a hit, and I’ll only be slightly disappointed if they don’t do the same this year.
