Nou Restaurant

Written By Scott Joseph On May 14, 2012

Nou pork chopThere isn’t a whole lot that’s new at Nou, an Altamonte Springs restaurant touting Venezuelan, Colombian, Puerto Rican and Mexican cuisine on its menu. I guess you could also include American among the Latin American fare as one of the listings is for a hamburguesa. Other items include shredded beef, shredded chicken, ceviche, salmon fillet with teriyaki sauce (?) and arepas. Everything I sampled was good, but ultimately rather modest.

A friend and I shared an arepa, which was supposed to be more in the style of Venezuela than, say, Colombia, but any nuances or differences were lost on me. Still, it was a nice little cornmeal bread.

My friend had the pabellon criollo, a traditional Venezuelan dish of rice and beans served with shredded beef. It’s often served with plantains or a fried egg. Here it was served with both, along with another small arepa. Again, good, not transcendentally so.

I had the chuletas de cerdo, also known as pork chops. They were nicely grilled and topped with sauteed vegetables. Each entree came with side dishes of the diner’s choice, including white or yellow rice, black or red beans, and plantains or tostones.

Service was gracious although a tad slow. The dining room is quite small and rather spartan, but comfortable.

I was glad I had visited, but there was little to entice me to return. But if you’re in the neighborhood, give it a try.

The Nou Restaurant is at 1158 W. State Road 436, Altamonte Springs (closer to the Forest City area on the way to Apopka). It is open for breakfast and lunch daily and dinner Monday through Saturday. Here is a link to nourestaurant.com. The phone number is 407-865-6106.
