New Home for Claddagh Cottage

It looks as though Claddagh Cottage Irish Pub has found a new home, and loyal fans will be happy to know it isn’t too far from its current location.

That spot, as we reported in August, is due to be demolished to make way for a Walgreens store. At the time of that report, owner Scott Vocca said that things were still up in the air regarding the date they would have to vacate the premises. It was stipulated by the developer, Vocca said, that they would get a 60-day notice.

That notice was served on Nov. 2, so the current Claddagh Cottage will close after a final New Year’s blowout.

Then, later in the new year, if all things come together, a new Claddagh Cottage Irish Pub will move 1.1 mile west to 2421 Curry Ford Road.

The new building will be a bit bigger — 3500 square feet as opposed to the current 2400 s.f. But the patron space, as Vocca described it, will not be much bigger. Instead, there will be a larger kitchen and a more ample storage area, he said.

The building has not been a pub or restaurant before, so it will take a lot of renovating, design and, of course, permitting and inspecting. So don’t get your hopes up for a St. Patrick’s Day opening. Vocca is being quite realistic in his expectations and knows that he’s going to need more than three months to get everything done.

And he knows that it’s going to be an expensive process, but, he says, “It’s nice to have some hope again.”

Vocca said a lot of his regulars expressed anger at Walgreens for being the cause of the move — some even threatening to picket the construction site — but he isn’t dwelling on it. “When a girl kicks you out of her apartment you don’t spend a week hanging around her parking lot.”

Besides a big New Year’s Eve party, Vocca said the current Claddagh will host a moving out party mid December.
