Maddey’s Craft & Cru struggled to get open in late June then faltered shortly after, closing to “regroup” for the month of August. It has not reopened, and according to chef and co-owner Jason Schofield it is “closed for good.”
“I tried everything to get reopened,” he said in a message.
The restaurant, in a space in the former Church Street Station, behind Hamburger Mary’s, was named for Schofield’s daughter and had an oblique New York vibe. But it was Schofield’s creative take on classic dishes that promised to add something to the downtown dining scene. (I found his Corned Beef Short Rib quite inventive in my first-look review.)
Schofield says that he still owns the rights to the name and concept and says that he plans to reopen. “I will live to fight another day.”
When asked if he had any advice for someone considering opening a restaurant, he said, “Having partners, investors are just like being married to someone. You really need to go on dates, and ask all the pertinent questions. Because you are married to them for the long haul, make sure you have operating agreements, and contracts that spell everything out.”
