North of the Border Bash to Feature Poutine-Off

Here’s something that may be of interest to those of you who may be contemplating a move to Canada after the November elections: a North of the Border Bash and Poutine Palooza. It will be from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Backyard of K Restaurant & Wine Bar on Monday, May 23. That’s Victoria Day, one of those holidays you’ll have to learn about before you load up your moving van.

You’ll also need to learn to like poutine, because apparently it’s served as a side dish at every meal. At least that’s what I’ve been told.

Poutine, for those of you who haven’t experienced it, consists of fries (legitimately called French fries since some of Canada is French speaking) topped with gravy and cheese curds.

As part of the bash, event co-organizers and native Canadians Kristin Manieri of Orlando Date Night Guide and Orlando Weekly restaurant critiic Faiyaz Kara, have challenged three chefs to out poutine each other with their versions of the artery-clogging classic.

Competing for the title of top poutiner are Hari Pulapaka, Cress, DeLand; Tim Dacey, Capa at the Four Seasons Orlando; and Austin Boyd, Seito Sushi, Baldwin Park.

Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door (depending on availability). Besides samples of poutine, guests will also sip Canadian whiskey, beer and wine, sample Canadian desserts (chocolate moose, I’m guessing), and listen to some live music with a Canadian beat.

Proceeds from ticket sales will go to the Kevin Fonzo Foundation. Ticket availability is limited; follow this link to the North of the Border Bash ticket sales site.

K Restaurant & Wine Bar is at 1710 Edgewater Drive, Orlando.
