Peperoncino

Peperoncino eggsIf you walked through Peperoncino’s front door and took too many steps you’d find yourself back outside through the little restaurant’s back door. Peperoncino is a relative newcomer to the Dellagio Plaza on Restaurant Row. It’s much smaller than its culinary neighbors, Dragonfly, Cantina Laredo, Big Fin and Fleming’s.

But what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in charm and, more important, the food. In the realm of Italian restaurants in Central Florida, few offer the sort of authentic experience that Peperoncino does. If you’re sitting in a spot that allows a view of the Dellagio’s central plaza, you might think you’re on a piazza looking at one of the fountains of Rome.

And don’t expect the food to bring you back to reality. It is expertly crafted from recipes cooked in the kitchens of the chef/owner Barbara Alfano’s grandmothers and is lovingly replicated here. Every bite is a veritable travelogue.

Matteo's Will Honor SJO Dining Deal Certificates

Do you have an SJO Dining Deal for Matteo's, the Italian restaurant that closed its International Drive location earlier this week? Thinking it's not worth the paper it's printed on, assuming you took the time to print it out? Well, take heart. Remy van Driel, vice president of the New York based restaurant, says the company is looking for another Central Florida location, and when they reopen, they will gladly honor the vouchers.

That's very nice. Of course, there's no information on where or when that might happen, but at least it's a glimmer of hope.

And if you're holding on to any other unused vouchers, this a good time to remind you of the line in the not-so-fine print on each of the SJO Dining Deals: Caveat couponer: although this certificate does not have an expiration date, it should be used promptly. Should the restaurant go out of business for any reason, the certificate will have no value.

Levy Restaurants to Host Cooking Classes for Kids

| Print |

Levy Restaurants is once again be offering cooking classes for kids at its three Downtown Disney restaurants this summer. The first announced class, on Saturday, June 23, has sold out, so a second class has been added for Sunday, June 24. The class is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The chefs of Fulton’s Crab House, Portobello Restaurant and Wolfgang Puck Café will walk through a full demonstration at each location from the Goin’ Fishin’ snack mix to a sweet treat of ‘dessert sushi’, made with fruit roll-ups and gummy worms. The class/menu will feature the following (and each child will taste their own creations):

Goin’ Fishin’ Snack Mix– Fulton’s Crab House

Ravioli Gigante – Portobello Restaurant

Dessert Sushi – Wolfgang Puck Café

But you don’t have to choose the restaurant based on the demonstration -- all three will be demonstrated at each location.

The Kids Cooking Class is $36.00 per child and available for children ages 6-12. To register, call 407-828-8996. Registration is on a first come, first served basis until the class is full or until Sunday, June 24th.

Here’s one of the recipes the kids will prepare:

Petey's NY Pizza

The little storefront in the strip of shops next to the Winn-Dixie on Colonial Drive at Bumby Avenue has perennially been a pizza parlor. I’ve lost track of how many pizzerias have occupied the space. I’m pretty sure Soprano’s, which has resided for several years now on Curry Ford Road, started out there. And I recall another, though not by name. I remember it because the young owner, while waiting on me at the counter, was scowling at a worker, an older woman who also appeared to be his mother. As she passed by, the owner stopped taking my order and said to her, “You’re really pissing me off.”

Charming.

Anyway, the space has history.

Matteo's Closed

Update 9:29 a.m. Tuesday): Just spoke with Remy Van Driel, vice president for the Matteo's organization, who confirmed that the International Drive location is closed. Van Driel said that that location just wasn't the ideal one for the Matteo's concept. Matteo's is a family-style Italian restaurant that serves large platters of food. It's more suitable to families or couples who can take the leftovers home. It's less attractive to tourists or conventioneers. Van Driel said the company came to an agreement with the landlord to end the lease. The building, at 5350 International Drive, was previously the location of Nelore, the Brazilian steakhouse that vacated the space to move to Winter Park.

Van Driel said Matteo's would likely return to Orlando but would seek a neighborhood location. "We all have homes here," he said, referring to company officials and managers. "When we go out to eat we go to Restaurant Row, or Windermere, or downtown Orlando." Van Driel said that many of the Orlando workers would relocate to the company's New York or other Florida restaurants. Matteo's also recently closed the Jupiter store.

When Matteo's first announced that it would enter the Orlando market, in October of 2010, its plans also called for a steakhouse in the former Salt Island property farther down International Drive. It was to have been Rothman's, an upscale steakhouse with Long Island and midtown Manhattan locations. Those plans were immediately put on hold shortly after Matteo's opened.

Although this item is confirmed, rumors still circulate. Now I'm hearing that the building won't be vacant long. A Chinese restaurant may step up and give it a go.

Stand by.

Earlier: Although it has not yet been confirmed, rumors are circulating that Matteo's, the popular upstate New York Italian restaurant that opened in Orlando in late 2010, has closed. The phone goes to the restaurant's recording, but attempts to make a reservation at the website are met with a message that the system is "temporarily down." A person who answered the phone at the company's Boca Raton restaurants said that Orlando is still open but that the Jupiter store had closed. Will follow up tomorrow, but something doesn't sound right here.
