Mad Hatters

Mad_Hatters_PizzaTo the list of Central Florida pizzerias that do a decent enough pie, please add the name Mad Hatters. If you’re an Oviedoan (Oviedoer? Oviedoite?) you’re probably already familiar with the place, which is on Central Avenue right there in the center of downtown. After all, it has been there since 1967, although not with the same owners. Still, that qualifies it as one of the area’s oldest eateries.

I stopped in recently and waded my way past the gaggle of chickens that roam about behind the eatery. I had called in my order for a Mama Mia, which features Black Forest ham, Italian sausage, onions, green bell peppers, mushrooms and three cheeses, mozzarella, Provolone and Romano.

The amount of toppings certainly looked impressive at first glance. However, upon closer inspection it was clear that the majority of what sat atop the pie consisted of the vegetables; the meats were a tad scarcer. Had there been more meat I would have been more likely to elevate the rating from good enough to better than most. I liked the crust, which was not too thin and not too thick, and the sauce had a pleasant tang. Put a bit more meat on the pizza and we’d be closer to a winner.

Besides pizzas, Mad Hatters also offers pasta dinners, salads and sub sandwiches, none of which I sampled.

Mad Hatters is at 10 S. Central Ave., Oviedo. It is open for lunch Tuesday through Sunday and dinner daily. Pizzas are available in 10-inch, 14-inch and 18-in sizes and range from $6.99 to $23.99. There is a small dine-in area; delivery is available, too. This link will take you to madhattersoviedo.net. The phone number is 407-365-3808.
