Junior's Pizza

When we did our search for best pizza in Orlando last year, I selected the finalists from among a list of known pizza makers who are highly regarded. I also solicited recommendations for a couple of “wild card” slots. One of those write-in candidates was Junior’s Pizza. Junior’s didn’t get enough votes to be a finalist, but it had enough fans to have a respectable showing. I didn’t have an opinion on it because I had never had Junior’s pies.

I corrected that recently when I stopped by the little pizzeria on Dean Road just south of University Boulevard and took home a large pizza.

The sauce was the best part of the pizza. It was pulpy and had a good tomatoey flavor, but wasn’t domineering. The crust was a perfect thickness, not too thick and not cracker thin. But it was a bit too soft and doughy. I attribute the slight sogginess to the moisture buildup in the take-out box. I wouldn’t call the toppings ample but neither were they skimpy. I had sausage, pepperoni, onions and mushrooms. I would have liked a little more sausage than what landed on top.

The folks were friendly enough. When I placed the order over the phone, the young woman who took it down assured me at the end of our conversation that doing so was “no problem.” That really put me at ease.

Junior’s Pizza makes a nice pie, and if I lived in the area I would order from them again.
