I popped into the new Thai and sushi place on Park Avenue the other night. Coincidentally, it replaces another Thai and sushi place, but this one looks a bit more encouraging.
Avenue Thai and Sushi replaces Thai Thai V (which also replaced a longtime sushi restaurant -- this address on the lower end of Park Avenue has been home to an Asian restaurant as long as I can remember).
Although I had enjoyed the Thai Thai in Cape Canaveral (Thai Thai III, I believe), the Thai Thai V just didn’t seem to be trying. Avenue Thai and Sushi is trying, and I think it will do fine as time goes along.
I sampled a bit of nigirizushi from the sushi bar menu. The escolar was just the right temperature, not cold but not warm, and it was molded nicely to the pad of rice.
Pad Thai was a bit of a small portion, but the noodles were nicely coated with the sauce, and tossed with peanuts with bean sprouts on the side. I would have appreciated a condiment tray to add more peanuts and spice, but it was all good anyway.
My server had an easy smile and kept a careful watch on the table. The decor is spartan but comfortable. It has the right feel for a college hangout, which is entirely possible for Rollins students who may have maxed out on their parents’ credit cards for the month.
Avenue Thai and Sushi is at 525 Park Ave. S., Winter Park. It is open for lunch and dinner daily. It does not yet have a website, although a group of young diners nearby were discussing developing one. The phone number is 407-960-3993.
