Cindy’s Cafe

If you’re in the vicinity of Florida Hospital Health Village, the medical complex on North Orange Avenue, you have another dining option besides the Panera Bread outlet inside the medical center or the Wendy’s across the street. (And how a “Health Village” would allow a fast food joint to reside nearby is a question worth asking at its next town meeting.)

Cindy’s Cafe, which used to reside on Virginia Drive moved into the space that had been a diner called Everybody’s Mom. I always liked that name, but ultimately it seemed like Mom just wasn’t up to pleasing everyone.

There isn’t anything about the name to indicate that Cindy’s is basically a Cuban cafe. That being the case, when I stopped in on a cold afternoon for a bite to eat, a hot-pressed Cuban sandwich and a cup of black bean soup seemed appropriate.

The sandwich was a classic construction with a better than average piling of ham and roast pork with some Swiss cheese and the all important pickles and mustard, which give it that tangy flavor component.

The black beans were quite basic, and might have been perked with some fresh chopped onions, but I don’t think I left any in the cup.

Cindy’s is set up as fast casual: order at the counter then take a seat to wait for your food to be delivered. If my experience is any indication, it will be delivered by someone who is friendly and helpful and who seems genuinely glad that you’re there. The ambience is downscale — think eating in someone’s kitchen, maybe the kitchen of anyone’s mom.

Cindy’s Cafe is at 2512 N. Orange Ave., Orlando. It is open for breakfast and lunch Monday through Saturday. The phone number is 407-898-6878.
